Chargers Eliminate Chiefs from Playoffs as Mahomes Injured Late
The Kansas City Chiefs’ hopes of reaching the playoffs ended on December 14, 2025, following a 16-13 defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers. The critical moment came late in the game when Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes sustained a serious injury, leaving him unable to continue and ultimately sidelining the team for the postseason.
The game began with Mahomes showcasing his skills, leading the Chiefs to an early 13-3 advantage at Arrowhead Stadium. However, the Chargers mounted a comeback, demonstrating resilience and determination. Justin Herbert, despite playing with a broken left hand, rallied the Chargers in the second half, culminating in a touchdown pass to KeAndre Lambert-Smith that reduced the deficit.
The Chiefs faced a turning point late in the fourth quarter. As Mahomes attempted to evade pressure from Chargers defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand, he was spun to the ground, injuring his left knee. After the game, the team confirmed that an MRI revealed a torn ACL, prompting discussions about surgical options for the two-time MVP.
Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew stepped in for Mahomes and initially provided hope to fans with a series of successful passes. However, with just 20 seconds remaining, Minshew’s pass intended for star tight end Travis Kelce was intercepted by Derwin James, sealing the victory for the Chargers and ending the Chiefs’ playoff aspirations for the first time since 2014.
Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh praised his team’s performance, stating, “This is a ball team. A real ball team. Love these guys.” His players echoed his sentiments, acknowledging the significance of defeating a long-standing rival at their home stadium. James remarked on the importance of the win, noting their perfect divisional record of 5-0.
The loss was particularly painful for the Chiefs, who had high expectations for the season following their previous successes. With Mahomes sidelined, Minshew will lead the team for the final three games, including a crucial matchup against the Denver Broncos on Christmas night. The Chiefs will now transition to a developmental phase, focusing on building a competitive roster for the future.
Injuries plagued both teams throughout the game, with Tyquan Thornton entering the concussion protocol after a hard hit. The Chargers also dealt with injuries, as wide receiver Quentin Johnson was inactive, and safety R.J. Mickens left with a shoulder injury.
The Chargers’ victory was their second consecutive win against the Chiefs this season, having previously defeated them in their opening game in Brazil. As the Chargers celebrate their success and aim for continued momentum, the Chiefs must regroup and look to the future after a disappointing end to their playoff hopes.
