Gas Prices Drop Ahead of Holiday Travel, Olean Stands Out

As the holiday season approaches, gas prices continue to decline across much of the United States, providing relief for travelers. The average price for a gallon of gasoline in New York state stands at $3.10, a decrease of 2 cents from December 8, 2024, and down approximately 4 cents compared to the same week last year, according to data from AAA Western and Central New York. Notably, the price in Olean remains higher, at around $3.33 per gallon at most outlets.

The national trend is also favorable, with the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline dropping to $2.91. This marks a 4-cent decrease since early December, and represents the lowest prices seen in four years. The national average has remained below $3.00 since December 2, 2024, a level not seen since May 2021.

Holiday Travel Boosts Demand for Lower Prices

With a record number of travelers expected to take to the roads this holiday season, drivers will benefit from reduced costs compared to last year. In December 2023, the national average was approximately $3.04. According to GasBuddy, the average price on Christmas Day is projected to be around $2.79, further illustrating a trend of decreasing costs for consumers.

This year’s more favorable pricing environment is attributed to several factors. As maintenance at refineries concludes, gasoline supplies have increased, easing pressure on prices. Additionally, OPEC has raised oil production throughout much of 2025, contributing to lower crude prices in the lead-up to Christmas.

Despite the influx of holiday travelers, demand for gasoline during winter months typically remains lower than in summer, which helps to stabilize prices. Though unexpected refinery issues or geopolitical tensions could create fluctuations, the overall market conditions are significantly improved compared to previous years when the economy was reopening and prices surged.

Current Trends in Diesel and Electric Vehicle Charging

The decrease in fuel costs extends to diesel as well. The national average for diesel fuel is currently $3.63, which is down 6 cents from the previous week. In New York, the average diesel price is $3.92, slightly lower by 1 cent.

In the realm of electric vehicle (EV) charging, both national and state averages remain steady. The average cost per kilowatt hour at public EV charging stations is 39 cents across the United States, while New York reports a rate of 38 cents, providing a consistent pricing structure for EV users as well.

As drivers prepare for holiday travel, the ongoing reduction in fuel prices is a welcome change, making journeys more affordable during a season typically associated with increased travel and expenses.
