Buffalo Sabres’ Jarmo Kekalainen Dismisses Jason Karmanos

Jarmo Kekalainen, the newly appointed general manager of the Buffalo Sabres, has made his first significant move by firing associate general manager Jason Karmanos. This decision took place on Saturday, marking a notable shift in the organization’s leadership structure. Karmanos, who had been with the Sabres for five seasons, was primarily responsible for overseeing the team’s top minor league affiliate, the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Karmanos, the son of Peter Karmanos, owner of the Hartford Whalers and Carolina Hurricanes, began his career in 1998 with the Whalers. His tenure in the NHL included a successful period with the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he celebrated two Stanley Cup victories.

In a statement regarding the change, Kekalainen expressed gratitude for Karmanos’ contributions, saying, “We thank Jason for his contributions to the Buffalo Sabres and Rochester Americans and wish him the best in his future endeavors.” This decision follows the recent firing of former general manager Kevyn Adams on Monday, which led to Kekalainen’s promotion.

Kekalainen, a Finnish national, brings extensive experience to the Sabres. He spent over a decade as the general manager of the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2013 to 2024. His appointment comes at a challenging time for the Sabres, who hold the record for the longest playoff drought in the NHL, spanning 14 consecutive seasons since their last playoff appearance in 2011. Currently, the team sits at the bottom of the Atlantic Division standings, on track to extend their playoff absence to 15 years.

The changes in management signal a new direction for the Sabres, as the organization seeks to reverse its fortunes and build a competitive team.
