New Study Links High-Fat Dairy to Reduced Dementia Risk

A recent study from Sweden has revealed a surprising connection between high-fat dairy consumption and a lower risk of dementia. The research, conducted by a team at Lund University, analyzed data from the Malmö Diet and Cancer cohort, which involved 27,670 adults aged 45 to 73 in Malmö, Sweden. Participants were monitored over an average of 25 years, with findings suggesting that certain high-fat dairy products may provide protective benefits against dementia.

The study categorized dairy into high-fat and low-fat types, with high-fat cheese defined as containing more than 20% fat and high-fat cream as more than 30% fat. Researchers gathered dietary information through interviews, food diaries, and questionnaires, allowing them to accurately assess dairy consumption.

Among the key findings, individuals who consumed at least 20 grams of high-fat cream daily exhibited a 16% lower risk of all-cause dementia compared to those who did not consume high-fat dairy products. The study also noted that participants ingesting at least 50 grams of high-fat cheese daily had a significantly reduced risk of developing dementia, particularly vascular dementia.

Emily Sonestedt, an associate professor of nutritional epidemiology at Lund University, commented on the unexpected nature of these results, stating, “We were a bit surprised to see a lower dementia risk among people who ate more high-fat cheese.” She highlighted the potential link to vascular dementia, as many cases involve damage to small blood vessels in the brain.

While high-fat dairy appears to have protective effects, the study found that most other dairy products, such as low-fat cheese, low-fat cream, milk, and fermented milk, did not show a consistent association with dementia risk. Notably, high butter intake (at least 40 grams per day) correlated with an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease, while high-fat cheese was linked to lower Alzheimer’s risk only in individuals without the APOE ε4 genetic risk variant.

Despite these promising findings, the researchers caution against drawing definitive conclusions. The study, published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, is observational in nature, meaning that it cannot establish direct cause-and-effect relationships. Furthermore, the dietary habits assessed were recorded only once, which limits the ability to account for changes over time.

The researchers acknowledged that while they adjusted for various lifestyle and health factors, determining the protective role of cheese itself is complex. “It is more likely part of a broader eating pattern and lifestyle that may support long-term brain health,” they noted.

As the study was conducted in Sweden, where hard, fermented cheeses are commonly consumed, the findings may not directly translate to populations with different dietary habits. Additionally, the study’s methodology means that some dementia cases may have gone unrecorded, and baseline cognitive status data was not available.

While these results open up avenues for further research into dietary influences on brain health, experts stress that more extensive studies are necessary to validate these associations and understand the underlying mechanisms. The research emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet and lifestyle in supporting cognitive health as individuals age.
