Hawaii Punter Billy Gowers Enters Transfer Portal at 29
The University of Hawaii football team faces yet another offseason search for a starting punter following the announcement that Billy Gowers will enter the NCAA transfer portal. Gowers, who has become a standout player for the Rainbow Warriors, leaves behind a remarkable legacy, having set a single-season record with an average of 46.24 yards per punt.
Reflecting on his time in Hawaii, Gowers, who hails from Australia, expressed gratitude for the experiences he gained during his tenure. “I had such a great time in Hawaii,” he stated. “You know how good the program is and how great the people are. Living in Hawaii for six months and getting introduced to the people and culture, it was amazing.”
As Gowers considers his next steps, the urgency of his age weighs heavily on his decision. At 29 years old, he acknowledges that he is older than many of his peers in college football, and he is eager to maximize his opportunities in pursuit of a professional career. “My clock is running out, obviously, as being a professional athlete,” Gowers explained. “You only have a limited amount of time where your body can suffice with the demands.”
Hawaii’s football program faces significant changes as the Mountain West conference undergoes a transformation, with five schools exiting and new members like UTEP and Northern Illinois joining in 2026. Furthermore, the Warriors have temporarily used the Ching Complex as their home venue while awaiting the construction of a new stadium to replace Aloha Stadium.
Despite these shifts, Gowers’ decision to transfer is not solely based on the desire for a higher-profile conference. He is also motivated by the need to showcase his skills to a broader audience of scouts. His powerful kicking ability allows him to launch punts behind a shield of blockers or execute rollouts, and he is capable of delivering left-footed punts up to 70 yards. Currently, Gowers ranks 10th nationally in punting average.
The decision to enter the transfer portal follows a series of developments within the program, including the withdrawal of Australian punter James “Thor” Rendell, who had initially accepted a scholarship offer from the Warriors before opting for a lucrative deal with Notre Dame. Although college football has increasingly embraced financial opportunities through name, image, and likeness agreements, Gowers emphasized that money was not the primary factor in his decision. “There’s money in college football, but it’s not the crux of my decision,” he stated.
Gowers’ journey to American football was unconventional. Before joining the Warriors, he played Australian rules football and pursued supplemental opportunities, including opening a barbershop in Melbourne. It was at his father’s suggestion that Gowers met with Nate Chapman, director and head punting coach at Prokick Australia, in the summer of 2024. Gowers excelled in a tryout and began training under Chapman’s guidance.
As the Warriors prepare for the upcoming season, they will need to find a suitable replacement for Gowers, who has been an integral part of the team. His departure marks another chapter in the ongoing evolution of Hawaii’s football program, as they seek to maintain their competitive edge in an ever-changing collegiate landscape.
