Pope Leo XIV inaugurated the year 2026 with a heartfelt call for peace during a New Year’s Day Mass held at St. Peter’s Basilica. Following the service, he addressed the congregation and visitors from his studio, urging an end to violence in nations affected by conflict and offering prayers for families suffering from the impacts of war.

In his message, delivered on January 1, which coincides with the church’s World Day of Peace, Pope Leo XIV focused on regions deeply scarred by turmoil. He emphasized the need for global harmony, stating, “Let us all pray together for peace: first, among nations bloodied by conflict and suffering, but also within our homes, in families wounded by violence or pain.” The day was marked by bright yet chilly weather, drawing numerous pilgrims and tourists to the iconic location.

This plea for peace follows a busy holiday season for the Pope, during which he condemned the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and called for dialogue between Russia and Ukraine. In his Christmas homily, he addressed the “rubble and open wounds” left by wars, highlighting the urgent need for compassion and reconciliation.

Looking ahead, Pope Leo XIV will take a brief respite before the church’s Epiphany celebrations on January 6. This significant occasion will also see the conclusion of the 2025 Holy Year, a once-in-a-quarter-century event that attracted millions of pilgrims to Rome. Following the festivities, the Pope is set to convene a two-day meeting with the College of Cardinals, which includes both those who participated in his election and older members who continue to play a role in church governance.

Pope Leo XIV, who made history as the first American pontiff, was elected by the College of Cardinals in May. His approach to leadership includes reviving traditions that had been largely set aside by his predecessor, Pope Francis. By engaging regularly with the cardinals, he aims to foster collaboration in guiding the 1.4 billion members of the Catholic Church worldwide.

As the Pope embarks on this new year, his messages resonate with a call for unity, compassion, and the vital importance of healing in a world often marked by strife.
