UPDATE: The College of Charleston has just secured a crucial victory over William & Mary, winning 88-79 at TD Arena on December 18, 2023. This defeat knocks the Tribe out of contention for the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) lead, highlighting the intense competition for top rankings in the league.

The Cougars, who have now won six consecutive games, improve to 10-6 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Meanwhile, William & Mary drops to 11-4 and 2-1 in the CAA following this loss. The defeat is particularly impactful for the Tribe, who were riding a wave of momentum with six wins in their previous seven games.

Despite their strong recent performance, the Tribe struggled from the field, hitting only 25 of 77 shots (32%) and a dismal 9 of 36 from beyond the arc. W&M’s Tunde Vahlberg Fasasi emerged as a standout, scoring 20 points, while teammate Chase Lowe contributed 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Charleston demonstrated remarkable balance in their offense, with Colby Duggan and Martin Kalu each netting 17 points, and Jlynn Counter adding 16. The Cougars dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Tribe 47-39, a crucial factor in their victory.

The game was a rollercoaster of momentum shifts. William & Mary initially led 11-4 but fell behind by as many as 16 points in the first half, finishing the period down 46-32. A determined start to the second half saw the Tribe launch a 12-0 run, narrowing the gap to just 46-44.

However, Charleston quickly responded with a 10-0 run, pushing their lead to 58-47. The Tribe fought back once more, closing to 74-72 with just under five minutes remaining, but could not maintain the momentum. Critical long-range shots by Duggan and Connor Hickman sealed the game for the Cougars at 84-75 with only 1:16 left on the clock.

This loss is a significant setback for William & Mary as they look to reclaim their position in the CAA standings. The Tribe will need to regroup quickly as they prepare for their next matchup, while Charleston will aim to extend their winning streak and solidify their place atop the conference.
