UPDATE: Doosan Enerbility has just announced a significant investment of approximately $207 million in its facilities this year, responding to surging demand for small modular reactors. This strategic move comes as the global appetite for energy sources tied to artificial intelligence continues to grow.

The company’s shares soared by nearly 14% during trading on Tuesday, climbing to 85,900 won (about $59) amid heightened market optimism. Investors are eagerly anticipating potential budget support from the U.S. Department of Energy for small modular reactor projects, positioning Doosan Enerbility as a key beneficiary due to its expertise in producing critical nuclear components.

Small modular reactors, designed in smaller, standardized units, are gaining traction for their flexibility and potential to reduce carbon emissions. However, concerns remain regarding costs, timelines, and regulatory hurdles as this technology moves closer to commercialization.

Doosan Enerbility has been advancing these technologies since 2019 and is aggressively expanding its presence in the U.S. market. Recently, the company signed a contract with U.S.-based X-energy to supply forged core components and intends to broaden its manufacturing capabilities through additional agreements.

In a collaborative effort, Doosan Enerbility has also partnered with industry giants, including Amazon and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, to enhance their reactor business. Industry insiders project that Doosan Enerbility, along with partners like NuScale Power and TerraPower, could pursue orders for approximately 60 reactor modules by 2030.

In its latest business report, Doosan Enerbility outlined plans for a facility investment totaling 328.5 billion won (around $227 million) this year, marking the highest investment level to date. Most of this capital will focus on innovative projects, particularly small modular reactors.

Furthermore, the company is set to invest a total of 806.8 billion won (approximately $556 million) starting this year to construct a dedicated reactor factory at its Changwon plant site. This expansion aims to optimize existing facilities, enhancing production capacity from 12 units annually to 20 units by 2031, representing a staggering 66% increase.

As developments unfold, industry stakeholders will be closely monitoring Doosan Enerbility’s ambitious plans and the broader implications for nuclear energy’s role in addressing future electricity demands.

Stay tuned for more updates on this evolving story that is poised to impact the energy sector significantly.
