Former Meta Engineer Launches AI Startup, Automates Millions of Calls
BREAKING: Ruchir Baronia, a former engineer at Meta, has launched an innovative AI startup, Frontdesk, that is now automating millions of business calls. This bold move comes just months after Baronia left a lucrative position to pursue his vision of enhancing customer engagement through artificial intelligence.
Baronia’s journey began in middle school, where he taught himself coding through YouTube. His first breakthrough was a voice app, sparked by a family emergency that highlighted the potential of technology to save lives. This pivotal moment led him to create Rescuer, a voice app designed to alert emergency contacts when users call for help, earning him recognition from officials and the media.
After graduating from UC Berkeley’s prestigious M.E.T. program with degrees in electrical engineering and business, Baronia joined Meta, where he spent over a year working on fintech projects. However, the comfort of a high salary and impressive stock options did not deter his entrepreneurial spirit.
In early 2025, after observing the rapid advancements in AI, particularly with ChatGPT, Baronia decided to act. He spent a weekend developing a prototype that integrated ChatGPT with a real phone line, which garnered significant attention online. The prototype’s success illuminated the potential for a product that could serve the needs of businesses struggling with customer communication.
“Every month I stayed at Meta was a month these businesses were not being served,” Baronia stated, reflecting on his decision to leave. In February 2025, he took the plunge, raising capital and relocating to New York City to establish Frontdesk.
Now, Baronia leads a team of former Big Tech professionals who are committed to building a comprehensive AI operating system that engages with customers across various channels, handling tasks such as scheduling and follow-ups. The office, located in SoHo, buzzes with energy, as the team shares a common goal: to transform how businesses interact with their customers.
As Frontdesk continues to evolve, Baronia remains dedicated to ensuring that his AI technology not only meets but exceeds user expectations. He reflects on his early days coding in his room, saying,
“The phones are still ringing, and the models are still getting better. I know where I want to be while that happens: close to the code and building something worth leaving comfort behind.”
With the demand for automated customer solutions on the rise, Baronia’s journey serves as an inspiring reminder of the impact that innovation and determination can have in today’s fast-paced tech landscape. As Frontdesk automates millions of calls, the startup is poised to reshape the way businesses manage customer interactions, delivering a crucial service in a competitive market.
