ChatGPT Web Traffic Plummets as Gemini Soars by 28%
URGENT UPDATE: New data reveals a dramatic shift in the AI landscape as ChatGPT faces intensified competition from Google’s Gemini 3. Recent figures from Similarweb show that while ChatGPT’s web traffic has decreased by 5.6% since November 2023, Gemini’s traffic surged by an impressive 28.4% month-over-month in December.
This trend is alarming for OpenAI, which has dominated the AI space but is now seeing competitors rapidly gaining ground. In December alone, ChatGPT attracted 5.5 billion visitors, compared to Gemini’s 1.7 billion, according to Similarweb data highlighted by Menlo Ventures partner Deedy Das.
The latest statistics not only underscore shifting dynamics in user engagement but also reflect the growing influence of Google’s AI advancements. Since the launch of Gemini 3 Pro in November, Google has capitalized on its established user base, integrating AI capabilities directly into its search products, a move that is challenging OpenAI’s market leadership.
Gemini’s web traffic growth is staggering, with an increase of 563.6% year-over-year, contrasting sharply with ChatGPT’s 49.5% rise. While ChatGPT remains the leader, the narrowing gap raises questions about its future dominance in the AI race.
In response to these challenges, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman issued a “code red” alert within the company. In an internal message, he emphasized the need to prioritize ChatGPT development amid concerns about Gemini’s potential impact. Altman recently stated, “Gemini 3 did not have the impact we were worried it might, but it did identify some weaknesses in our product strategy, and we’re addressing those very quickly.”
The competition extends beyond chatbots, as both companies vie for supremacy in the image generation market. Following the release of Google’s Nano Banana Pro AI model, OpenAI quickly announced the launch of ChatGPT Images, highlighting the urgency to innovate and retain user interest.
As both platforms continue to evolve, the implications for users are significant. With more choices available, consumers will benefit from improved AI capabilities, but the pressure on OpenAI is palpable. Altman noted that the “code red” periods typically last between six to eight weeks, indicating that immediate changes are on the horizon.
WHAT TO WATCH NEXT: As OpenAI accelerates its response to Gemini’s rise, industry experts will closely monitor updates and feature enhancements from both companies. The AI race is heating up, and with consumers eager for cutting-edge technology, the next few weeks will be critical for user retention and innovation.
