Duke’s Cameron Boozer, BYU’s AJ Dybantsa Lead Wooden Award Watchlist
BREAKING: The Wooden Award midseason top 25 watchlist has just been released, featuring a strong showing from freshmen, with Cameron Boozer of Duke and AJ Dybantsa from BYU leading the pack. This announcement, made earlier today, highlights the standout performances of these young athletes as they make their mark in collegiate basketball.
Cameron Boozer currently tops the nation in scoring, averaging an impressive 23.3 points per game, while Dybantsa follows closely with 23.1 points per game. Boozer’s consistent performance has been pivotal in Duke’s strong start to the season, where they hold a 14-1 record. He has scored at least 14 points in every game played so far and has achieved seven double-doubles, also averaging 9.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists.
In contrast, AJ Dybantsa has captivated fans with one of the most impressive stretches ever recorded by a freshman. In December alone, he averaged an astounding 27.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, 5.7 assists, and 2.3 steals, shooting nearly 66% from the field. This remarkable performance has set the stage for an exciting second half of the season.
Not far behind these two stars is Caleb Wilson from North Carolina, who is making his case with an average of 19.3 points and 10.9 rebounds, including 10 double-doubles in just 15 games.
The watchlist also includes talented freshmen facing injury challenges. Darryn Peterson of Kansas has played only six games this season due to a hamstring injury but recently showcased his potential with 32 points in just 32 minutes against TCU. Meanwhile, Mikel Brown Jr. from Louisville has missed five consecutive games due to a lower back injury.
As the season progresses, veterans like Braden Smith from Purdue are also in contention. Smith leads the nation in assists, averaging 9.6 assists per game, and is on pace to potentially break the all-time Division I career assists record held by Bobby Hurley with 1,076 assists.
Both Joshua Jefferson of Iowa State and Yaxel Lendeborg of Michigan have emerged as legitimate contenders as well. Jefferson is averaging 17.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 5.4 assists, contributing to a perfect 14-0 Cyclones team. Lendeborg, a transfer from UAB, leads the No. 2 Wolverines with 14.7 points and is second on the team in rebounding and assists.
Players not included in today’s watchlist will still have opportunities to make the late-season list and the final ballot for the award. This creates an exciting atmosphere in collegiate basketball as the race for the Wooden Award heats up.
Stay tuned for further developments as the season unfolds, and watch for these rising stars as they continue to chase excellence on the court.
