Firefighters Extinguish Blaze in Detached Garage Living Space
Firefighters from the Orange and Athol Fire Departments successfully extinguished a fire in an unoccupied living space above a detached garage at 435 East Main St. on Thursday afternoon, March 2026. The incident was reported at 15:35. Fire crews worked diligently to control the blaze, which had the potential to spread rapidly.
Fire Response and Operations
Upon arrival, firefighters found a long line of fire trucks lining the driveway, as crews set up hoses to draw water from a hydrant on East Main Street. This setup required temporarily closing Wheeler Avenue to ensure safety and access. Firefighters entered the second-floor living area to combat the flames, while a separate team worked to ventilate the roof, allowing better access to the fire’s source.
Orange Fire Chief James Young confirmed that the fire was contained without any injuries reported. The living space, which had recently been renovated, was not occupied at the time and was primarily used for storage. The property owners, Mary Malo and Michelle Lopes, expressed relief that their motorcycle, a prized possession, was saved from the flames.
Property Owner’s Reaction
Standing beside the motorcycle, Malo stated, “I was just glad they got my Harley out of there.” The owners had purchased the property in March 2025 and were unaware of how the fire had started. Fortunately, they confirmed that the property is insured, which will aid in addressing any damages incurred from the incident.
During the firefighting efforts, the New Salem Fire Department provided coverage for the Orange Fire Station, ensuring that emergency services remained available to the community. Firefighters faced challenging conditions, as they cut vents into the ceiling of the garage to allow smoke and heat to escape, aiding in their fight against the fire.
As the situation unfolded, firefighters remained focused on controlling the blaze and preventing further damage. They worked tirelessly to ensure that the fire was completely extinguished, demonstrating the high level of professionalism and commitment to public safety that is characteristic of these emergency responders.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, the swift response and effective teamwork among the fire departments were crucial in preventing what could have been a more devastating outcome. The scene highlighted the importance of readiness and coordination in emergency situations, showcasing the dedication of local fire services.
