Study Highlights Risks of Stopping GLP-1 Weight-Loss Drugs

Patients who discontinue the use of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist medications, such as the weight-loss injections Wegovy and Ozempic, are facing significant challenges, including a rapid return of intense hunger and weight gain. A study led by researchers at the University of Oxford reveals that individuals who stop taking these drugs regain weight at a rate four times faster than those following alternative weight management programs.

The analysis reviewed data from 37 weight loss medication studies, encompassing over 9,000 participants. It found that on average, individuals returned to their original weight within just 1.7 years after ceasing treatment. Many patients have reported experiencing a resurgence of hunger shortly after stopping the injections. Tanya Hall, who has used GLP-1 injections, described her experience to the BBC, stating, “It was like something opened up in my mind and said: ‘Eat everything, go on, you deserve it because you haven’t eaten anything for so long.’” Hall expressed her distress over the amount of food she consumed just days after ending her treatment.

The research team also noted a concerning trend: patients lost the secondary health benefits associated with GLP-1 medications, such as improved blood pressure and cholesterol levels, which reverted to previous levels within approximately 1.4 years. The researchers concluded that stopping these medications leads to rapid weight regain and a reversal of beneficial effects on cardiometabolic markers. “This review found that cessation of weight management medications is followed by rapid weight regain and reversal of beneficial effects,” the authors stated.

Dimitrios Koutoukidis, senior author and associate professor at the University of Oxford, explained that the reliance on medication may inhibit the development of sustainable lifestyle changes. “This faster regain could be because people using drugs don’t need to consciously practice changing their diet to lose weight,” he said.

The findings have prompted calls for a more comprehensive approach to weight management. Sam West, lead author and research scientist at the University of Oxford, emphasized the importance of understanding the implications of these drugs. “These medicines are transforming obesity treatment and can achieve important weight loss,” he noted. “However, our research shows that people tend to regain weight rapidly after stopping—faster than we see with behavioral programs.”

While GLP-1 drugs have demonstrated remarkable effectiveness, West cautioned against their short-term use without a broader strategy for long-term weight management. “This isn’t a failing of the medicines—it reflects the nature of obesity as a chronic, relapsing condition,” he said.

Advocates for a more holistic approach to weight management emphasize the need for comprehensive support alongside medication. Faye Riley, research communications lead at Diabetes UK, remarked, “Weight loss drugs can be effective tools for managing weight and type 2 diabetes risk—but this research reinforces that they are not a quick fix.” She urged for tailored support to help individuals maintain their weight loss after discontinuing medication.

These findings raise important questions about the long-term implications of GLP-1 medications and the necessity for a more integrated approach to obesity treatment. As the landscape of weight management continues to evolve, it is crucial to balance the benefits of these drugs with the need for sustainable lifestyle changes.
