Illinois football has made a significant addition to its roster by signing transfer defensive lineman Connor Sullivan from Washington State. This move comes as the Illini aim to bolster their defensive unit following a challenging period of losses through the transfer portal. Sullivan, a native of Glenview, Illinois, represents an important step in the team’s efforts to secure FBS-level talent.

Sullivan’s journey to Illinois includes a limited collegiate experience. He participated in three games at Washington State during the 2025 season before redshirting. Over that time, he recorded only 13 snaps without any statistical contributions. His playing time has been further hampered by an injury that sidelined him for his entire senior year at Loyola Academy, leaving three years since he last played a full season in high school.

As Illinois navigates a transition phase, the team has lost five defensive linemen to the transfer portal, including two starters, which highlights the need for depth. Sullivan’s signing could provide some relief, although expectations will be tempered. Coach Bret Bielema and his staff are likely to take a cautious approach, gradually integrating Sullivan into the lineup. While he may initially contribute mainly on special teams in 2026, there is potential for him to climb the depth chart if he demonstrates progress in the upcoming spring and fall practices.

Sullivan’s past achievements in high school are noteworthy. During his junior year, he helped lead Loyola Academy to three consecutive state titles, recording 54 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and five sacks. This track record suggests that, when healthy, he has the capability to develop into a valuable asset for the Illini defense.

The connection to Loyola Academy may ease Sullivan’s transition to the collegiate level. He shares this background with former players like James Kreutz and his brother Josh Kreutz, who also attended the school. These ties could facilitate a smoother integration into the program, fostering a sense of familiarity as he embarks on this new chapter.

With four years of eligibility remaining, Sullivan’s signing is more than just a short-term solution for Illinois football. It reflects a strategic investment in long-term success. If he can maintain his health and regain his competitive edge, Sullivan has the potential to evolve into a rotational player, or even a starter, over the next few seasons. As the Illini continue to build their team, this addition could prove to be a crucial part of their defensive strategy moving forward.
