BREAKING: Ted Chen, a beloved reporter for NBC4 News in Los Angeles, officially signed off on July 26, 2023, marking the end of a distinguished 28-year career in journalism as he embarks on a new journey as a Christian pastor.

During his farewell broadcast, Chen revealed his transition, saying, “Many of you know I’ve been in seminary for the last several years. I got my master’s in Christian studies, and right now I’m pursuing my doctorate in ministry.” His last day on air culminated in a heartfelt video tribute with co-anchors Colleen Williams and Michael Brownlee.

Chen expressed excitement about his new role, stating, “I’m looking forward to a little slower pace and a chance to dig deeper.” Reflecting on his years at NBC4, he acknowledged the adrenaline rush of news reporting and the responsibility he felt throughout his career.

His extensive journey took him from Reno to Fresno and finally to Los Angeles, where memorable assignments included coverage of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. “It was China’s first Olympics and I remember how proud my parents were,” he shared, highlighting the emotional significance of the event.

Chen’s career also featured lighter moments, such as celebrity interviews, including a memorable encounter with Leonard Nimoy. “I normally don’t get starstruck, but — him. Mr. Spock,” he recalled, illustrating the human side of his reporting.

In a touching farewell, fellow reporter Hetty Chang reminisced about Chen’s impact on the community, recalling the overwhelming fan reaction during the Golden Dragon Chinese New Year parade. “People were stopping our car, saying, ‘Stop the car! I want to take a picture with Ted Chen!’”

Chen’s wife, Ariell, took to social media to share her pride, posting “I’M SO PROUD OF YOU” in an Instagram story. Their unique love story—connected through a matchmaker and their shared faith at Vintage Church in Santa Monica—adds a personal touch to his transition.

As he moves into full-time ministry, Chen leaves behind a legacy of impactful journalism. He humbly concluded, “I’ll take the encouragement — and give God all the glory,” encapsulating his faith-driven approach moving forward.

This shift marks a significant moment in both Chen’s life and the community he has served for decades. NBC4 News has yet to comment on his departure but is sure to feel the void left by this iconic journalist. As Ted Chen steps into this new chapter, viewers and colleagues alike will undoubtedly miss his presence on the airwaves.
