Giants Secure Top Prospect Luis Hernandez with $5M Deal
UPDATE: The San Francisco Giants have just signed Venezuelan shortstop Luis Hernandez, the top-rated prospect in this year’s international amateur draft, to a staggering $5 million deal. This announcement comes on the very first day of the 2026 international signing period, marking a significant move for the Giants amidst ongoing turmoil in Venezuela.
Hernandez, who turned 17 years old last month, has left the political unrest in his home country behind, relocating to the Dominican Republic for training and development. Giants senior director of international scouting Joe Salerno confirmed the transition, stating, “Our players that we were following or we were going to sign are all safe.” Salerno emphasized that they successfully facilitated Hernandez’s exit from Venezuela through Curacao.
The urgency surrounding this signing is palpable. With the international signing period running until December 15, more than 170 players have already finalized deals. Hernandez’s signing bonus is the highest thus far, highlighting his potential as a future star. Salerno expressed confidence in Hernandez’s rapid advancement, noting, “He is above his age for his maturity… He plays golf. Think about it. A 16-year-old, a 17-year-old in Latin America playing golf, you could see the advancement that he has had with his maturity.”
Hernandez’s deal surpasses others in the current class, including Dominican shortstop Johenssy Colome, who signed for $4 million with the Athletics, and Venezuelan outfielder Francisco Renteria, who inked a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies for the same amount. Notably, Puerto Rican shortstop Wandy Asigen secured a $3.9 million bonus with the New York Mets.
Other players making headlines include Dominican outfielder Angel Nuñez with Cincinnati for $3 million, Venezuelan outfielder Angeibel Gomez with Kansas City for $2,797,500, and Dominican outfielder Emanuel Luna with St. Louis for $2.3 million. The deals reflect a competitive environment as teams look to bolster their rosters with fresh talent.
Salerno remains optimistic about Hernandez’s future, indicating that he may bypass the Dominican Summer League and directly join a U.S. minor league team. This strategy underscores the Giants’ commitment to nurturing elite talent and adapting to the challenges posed by international player signings.
As the international signing period unfolds, teams have initial allotments ranging from $5.44 million to $8.03 million, with the possibility to increase their total by up to 60% through trades. The New York Mets, starting with a lower figure, recently acquired an additional $1.5 million from Cleveland in exchange for left-hander Franklin Gomez.
With more signings expected in the coming days, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how these young prospects impact their teams. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
