PEL Manufacturing Celebrates 40 Years of Innovation in Torrance

PEL Manufacturing, a family-run business specializing in the production of coils for book binding, is marking a significant milestone this year as it celebrates 40 years of operations in Torrance, California. The company, which has deep roots in the community, has transformed from a modest factory into a notable player in its industry, despite facing numerous challenges along the way.

Founded in 1934 in New York, PEL Manufacturing is recognized as the oldest remaining spiral coil manufacturer in the United States. The company began its journey under the ownership of Joe and Phyllis Pelezarre, who established the original factory. In 1985, the Renderos family entered the picture when Victoria Renderos, fleeing civil unrest in El Salvador, took a job at PEL Manufacturing. Armed only with determination, she began her career as a machine operator in a challenging environment.

Reflecting on her decision to leave El Salvador, Victoria stated, “I did not leave for a better opportunity; I left to save our lives.” The civil war in her home country had made daily life perilous, forcing her to seek a safer future for her family.

As she navigated her new life in the United States, Victoria faced significant obstacles, including language barriers and financial hardship. However, her perseverance led her to rise through the ranks at PEL Manufacturing, ultimately becoming a manager. Her children, including current CEO Francessca Renderos, often accompanied her to work during the summers, instilling in them a strong work ethic and a sense of family legacy.

Francessca joined PEL in her teenage years and, after earning her degree from California State University, Dominguez Hills, she continued to work at the company, taking on various roles. When the opportunity arose to purchase the business from the aging Pelezarre, she seized it. On October 1, 2017, she became the owner of PEL Manufacturing.

“Building relationships with clients brings me a lot of joy,” Francessca said. “I am proud to have my family working here.” Her brother, Rafael Renderos, also plays a vital role in the company, overseeing marketing and sales. Together, they have navigated the complexities of running a small business in a competitive market.

Despite their success, the Renderos family has faced challenges from larger overseas competitors who produce similar products at lower costs. The workforce at PEL has dwindled from 49 employees to just seven, as they have had to adapt to a changing industry landscape. Yet, the Renderos family remains committed to their product’s quality and innovation.

PEL Manufacturing is unique in that it is the only manufacturer in the United States producing aluminum spiral coils. The company has a history of innovation, having created a stronger and lighter alternative to traditional steel coils. “We love a challenge, and we always like to be unique,” Rafael noted, emphasizing the company’s commitment to meeting customer needs.

The company has also expanded its offerings beyond coils, introducing laser engraving and printing services. Their new venture, By When? Planner Co., allows customers to design and produce personalized planners and gifts, showcasing the company’s versatility.

Victoria Renderos, now a grandmother, reflects on her journey with pride. “I am a mother, a grandmother, an immigrant and a woman who has walked through fire and sorrow,” she declared. Her story, alongside that of her family, encapsulates the resilience and determination that have defined PEL Manufacturing over the past four decades.

As PEL Manufacturing celebrates its 40th anniversary in Torrance, the Renderos family’s legacy continues to thrive. Their commitment to quality, innovation, and customer relationships ensures that the company remains a staple in the book binding industry for years to come.
