FDA Approves LEADOPTIK’s LIA System to Enhance Lung Biopsy Accuracy
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted 510(k) clearance for LEADOPTIK’s innovative Last Inch Assessment™ (LIA) system, designed to significantly enhance the accuracy of lung biopsy procedures. This system integrates high-resolution imaging capabilities directly into the biopsy tool, addressing a critical gap in current bronchoscopy workflows.
According to George Cheng, MD, a member of LEADOPTIK’s Clinical Advisory Board and affiliated with UC San Diego School of Medicine, the LIA system represents a significant advancement. “For the first time, high-resolution depth imaging is integrated directly into the biopsy tool, allowing physicians to see and characterize tissue from within,” Cheng stated. He highlighted that existing procedures often depend on external imaging or post-procedure validation, which can complicate and delay diagnosis.
The LIA system employs proprietary silicon metamaterials to deliver depth imaging directly into standard biopsy tools. LEADOPTIK claims that this technology provides imaging resolution that is 50 times better than existing methods. Another Clinical Advisory Board member, Ali Sadoughi, MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, emphasized the importance of confirming that the needle samples the correct tissue. “Being close to a lung nodule is not enough,” he noted. “LEADOPTIK’s technology has the potential to fundamentally improve confidence at the point of biopsy.”
LEADOPTIK’s CEO and Co-Founder, Reza Khorasaninejad, expressed optimism about the implications of this technology. “Our preclinical data supporting this FDA clearance are exceptionally encouraging, demonstrating biopsy accuracy exceeding 95%,” he stated. As the company prepares for hospital deployment, Khorasaninejad emphasized the need for real-time insights, particularly in challenging cases where imaging interpretations can be crucial.
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, accounting for nearly 1.8 million deaths annually—more than the next two leading causes, colorectal and liver cancer, combined. The potential of the LIA system to facilitate timely diagnoses could significantly impact patient outcomes in lung cancer treatments.
Despite advancements in screening methods, many patients continue to miss critical diagnoses. Mary Pasquinelli, DNP, who leads the lung screening program at UI Health in Chicago, remarked on the challenges faced. “We know we can reduce lung cancer mortality by 20% to 25% with screening,” she noted, emphasizing the importance of proactive measures.
Pasquinelli’s team implements a hybrid screening model that integrates centralized coordination with primary care to improve screening rates. They actively monitor low-dose CT (LDCT) orders and engage directly with patients to ensure follow-up consultations and scans. “Many of my patients are anxious. They feel shame about smoking or fear what we’ll find,” she explained. By educating patients on pulmonary nodules and the nature of scans, she helps them understand that most findings are benign, encouraging them to proceed with necessary screenings.
As the healthcare community anticipates the deployment of the LIA system, the focus remains on enhancing diagnostic accuracy and ultimately improving survival rates for lung cancer patients. The integration of advanced imaging technology represents a promising step forward in addressing one of the most critical unmet needs in lung cancer diagnostics.
