Athletics Hire Bill Schmidt as Scouting Assistant Amid Vegas Move
BREAKING: The Oakland Athletics have just announced the hiring of former Colorado Rockies general manager Bill Schmidt as the club’s special assistant to the scouting department. This urgent move comes as the team prepares for a pivotal transition to Las Vegas, where a new $2 billion stadium is under construction.
The announcement was made on Friday, marking a significant addition to the A’s front office. Schmidt, who served as the Rockies’ senior vice president and general manager for four seasons starting in October 2021, brings a wealth of experience to the Athletics. He has been integral to scouting operations since joining the Rockies in 1999, previously holding the role of vice president of scouting from 2007 onward.
His impressive career also includes positions as a national crosschecker with the Cleveland Indians from 1995 to 1999 and regional supervisor for the New York Yankees in Southern California, Arizona, and Nevada from 1988 to 1995. Notably, Schmidt was recognized as the 2019 West Coast Scout of the Year and received the prestigious Legends in Scouting Award.
As the Athletics relocate to West Sacramento, California, for the first of three seasons in a Triple-A ballpark, the pressure is on to build a competitive team. The club is set to move to Las Vegas, with a new 33,000-capacity stadium on the Las Vegas Strip projected to open in time for the 2028 season. Club officials have assured the Las Vegas Stadium Authority that the construction is on schedule.
The addition of Schmidt to the Athletics’ scouting department underscores the team’s commitment to enhancing its talent evaluation as it prepares for this major transition. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how Schmidt’s expertise will influence the team’s future roster decisions.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Athletics continue to make strategic moves leading into this new chapter.
