McCaffrey Triumphs with Dual Honors After Resilient 2025 Season

The San Francisco 49ers announced their team award winners on March 11, 2025, just two days after their playoff elimination by the Seattle Seahawks. Among the honorees, running back Christian McCaffrey stood out, receiving the prestigious Len Eshmont and Bill Walsh awards following a remarkable comeback season. McCaffrey achieved a total of 1,202 rushing yards and 924 receiving yards in 2025, recovering from an injury-plagued 2024 season where he played only four games due to Achilles tendonitis and a knee injury.

The Eshmont Award recognizes the player who exemplifies the courageous play of former 49ers player Len Eshmont, who was part of the original 1946 team and later coached at Navy and Virginia. The Walsh Award honors a player who embodies the “standard of professional excellence established by Bill Walsh” during his tenure with the 49ers, a period that included three Super Bowl victories.

Reflecting on his achievements, McCaffrey expressed gratitude for the support he received throughout his challenging year. “This was one of the hardest years of my life after everything that happened to me last year,” he stated. “I think obviously we’re not proud of the way it ended, but when I look back at all the people that helped me out and believed in me when a lot of people didn’t, I appreciate that.”

Additional Award Winners Highlight Team Spirit

Other winners included Colton McKivitz, who earned the Bobb McKittrick Award, given to the offensive lineman who embodies the courage and intensity of the former offensive line coach. McKivitz started in all 19 games at right tackle for the 49ers this season. Dee Winters received the Hazeltine Iron Man Award, determined by defensive coaches, after achieving a career-high of 101 tackles in his first full season as a starter.

Defensive lineman Alfred Collins was awarded the Thomas Herrion Memorial Award for his impactful play as a rookie. Notably, Collins made a key contribution during the 49ers’ victory over the Rams on October 2, 2024, with a forced fumble and recovery at a critical moment in the game.

The Perry/Yonamine Unity Award was jointly awarded to McKivitz and linebacker Curtis Robinson, based on votes from their teammates. Robinson also serves as the 49ers’ nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, highlighting his community involvement and leadership.

Finally, the quarterback duo of Brock Purdy and Mac Jones received the Garry Niver Award, recognizing their professionalism and cooperation with the media. Purdy has been a consistent presence at press conferences, while Jones provided moments of levity and support during Purdy’s absence due to turf toe.
