Arizona Senator Calls for ICE to be ‘Completely Remade’ Now
UPDATE: Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego is demanding a complete overhaul of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), following the fatal shooting of Minnesota resident Renee Good by an ICE officer earlier this month. Gallego’s urgent call comes as protests erupt nationwide, with growing demands for ICE to be dismantled amidst allegations of excessive force.
In a striking statement made on Monday, Gallego condemned President Donald Trump‘s administration for its handling of ICE, referring to the agency as a “goon squad” that prioritizes intimidation over public safety. “ICE needs to be totally torn down,” Gallego stated, emphasizing that the organization should be restructured to focus on actual threats, rather than targeting immigrants who pose no danger.
The tragic death of Renee Good has intensified scrutiny on ICE, particularly after claims surfaced that the officer involved acted in self-defense as Good allegedly attempted to run the agent over. This incident has not only fueled protests but has also ignited a fierce debate among lawmakers about the role of ICE in American communities.
“What we’re seeing right now is not what we want from ICE,” Gallego asserted. “We can create a force that is actually focused on immigration and on security, and not this type of intimidation that’s happening right now.”
According to a recent CNN poll, more than half of Americans now believe that ICE is making cities less safe. The rising discontent is prompting many Democratic lawmakers to renew their calls to abolish the agency altogether.
White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson quickly responded to Gallego’s comments, asserting that ICE officers play a critical role in maintaining community safety by removing dangerous criminals. “Gallego should commend our brave law enforcement officers instead of siding with criminals,” Jackson stated, defending the agency’s actions and its officers.
As the debate over ICE continues to escalate, the implications of Gallego’s comments resonate across the nation. The urgency of this issue reflects a growing divide among lawmakers and the public regarding immigration enforcement and the safety of communities.
With protests ongoing and calls for reform gaining momentum, all eyes are on Congress and the White House to see how this situation will unfold. The future of ICE hangs in the balance as advocates for reform push for changes to an agency many view as operating outside the bounds of acceptable law enforcement.
This developing story will continue to evolve, and more updates are expected as lawmakers and communities respond to the increasing pressure for change.
