EXO’s REVERXE Album Sales Spark Controversy Over Baekhyun’s Absence
EXO’s eagerly anticipated comeback with their album REVERXE and its title track “Crown” has been met with significant backlash, particularly following the disappointing first-day sales figures. According to data from Hanteo, the album sold 265,934 copies on its first day. While this figure would typically be seen as strong for many K-pop groups, it has drawn sharp criticism given EXO’s previous success.
In stark contrast, the group’s last album, EXIST, sold over one million copies on its debut day. This drastic decline in sales has not gone unnoticed by fans and netizens, who have started to attribute the downturn to the absence of Baekhyun, a member of the sub-unit CBX. Many fans argue that Baekhyun played a pivotal role in driving the group’s sales, with some expressing frustration over the current situation.
Several social media posts have directly blamed Baekhyun’s absence for the album’s underwhelming performance. One user stated, “The whole group sales were built around one member and the others were just decoration.” This sentiment has been echoed by many, as fans recall Baekhyun’s previous contributions to the group’s commercial success.
Critics have also pointed fingers at SM Entertainment, suggesting the company is fully aware of Baekhyun’s financial value. Past contract disputes between the singer and the agency have fueled speculation. One post noted, “Their fans wanted us to believe Baekhyun wasn’t necessary only for them to go from selling a million to 250k.”
The public’s reaction highlights a significant shift in perception towards EXO and its members. Comparisons between Baekhyun’s solo achievements and EXO’s current sales figures have been common, with many calling the difference “embarrassing.” One user remarked, “Wow, this downgrade shows what happens when you take away Baekhyun’s sales from the group.”
Despite the criticism, EXO remains a major player in the K-pop industry. The response to REVERXE and its sales performance emphasizes the group’s current challenges and the evolving dynamics within the fanbase. As discussions continue, it is clear that Baekhyun’s influence on EXO’s sales cannot be easily dismissed, raising questions about the future of the group without his presence.
