Cat Cuddle Club Launches at Benicia Public Library to Promote Adoptions

The Humane Society of the North Bay is set to launch its first Cat Cuddle Club event on March 2, 2024, at the Benicia Public Library. This new initiative expands upon the existing Cuddle Club program, which has successfully paired adoptable dogs with potential pet owners. The introduction of adoptable cats and kittens aims to address the challenges posed by the ongoing kitten season.

Joseph A. Hayden, Board President of the Humane Society, highlighted the urgency of this initiative: “It’s even more important that we explore novel ways to get the anticipated animals we will be intaking adopted.” The Cat Cuddle Club will take place from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the launch day, featuring feline guests such as Sydney, Pibble, and Chicky.

The Cuddle Club program, originally founded by Carlene Coury, began as a means of providing pet therapy to senior housing and assisted living facilities throughout Southern Solano County. Over the years, it has evolved to bring animals directly to prospective adopters, fostering connections between residents and pets in need of loving homes. Hayden expressed excitement about this new direction: “We’re really excited that we can transport cats that will win the hearts of the public.”

In light of the peak kitten season, the shelter faces challenges, including a high volume of incoming cats and limited resources. Expanding the focus to include cats in adoption events aims to alleviate some of these pressures. “We’re changing course for a moment,” said Hayden, emphasizing the importance of giving adoptable cats and kittens the attention they deserve.

The launch of the Cat Cuddle Club is part of a broader strategy to reach new audiences. The organization plans to explore partnerships with other venues where cats are welcome, particularly assisted living facilities that cater to low-maintenance pets. Hayden noted, “We’ll be exploring that, even though we’ll always bring the more transportable dogs as a permanent part of our animal therapy.”
