Binghamton University Secures $30 Million for AI Research Center

The State University of New York at Binghamton has received a historic academic gift of $30 million, the largest in the institution’s history. This significant funding will be utilized to establish the Center for AI Responsibility and Research, marking the creation of the first independent AI research center at a public university in the United States.

The generous contribution comes from a group of donors led by Tom Secunda, a Binghamton University alumnus and co-founder of Bloomberg LP. Secunda also serves as the independent chair of the board of the Empire AI Consortium. In addition to the private funding, the State University of New York (SUNY) is committing $25 million in research capital to support this initiative.

Focus on Safe and Responsible AI Development

The newly established center is set to address critical research areas including the safety, security, and transparency of artificial intelligence systems. Its mission is to ensure that AI technology serves the public good, aiming to become the nation’s leading academic hub for responsible AI development.

Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly, and as the technology increasingly influences everything we do, we need to be just as nimble in making sure AI works for New Yorkers safely and responsibly.” The center’s establishment is expected to foster public trust through rigorous research and development.

Secunda echoed this sentiment, explaining that the center will facilitate the creation of essential tools, standards, and a talent pipeline necessary for the secure and transparent use of AI. “This new Center will help create the tools, standards, and talent pipeline the country needs so AI is not only powerful, but also secure, transparent and worthy of public confidence,” he said.

Strategic Collaboration and Future Plans

Binghamton University is a founding member of the Empire AI Consortium, an initiative led by Governor Hochul to provide the state’s leading public and private research universities with access to advanced AI computing resources. The center will collaborate with the consortium to attract top AI talent to New York state.

To further advance its mission, SUNY and Binghamton University are initiating a national search for the leadership and faculty needed to guide the center’s independent research efforts. This recruitment aims to translate evidence-based findings into applicable real-world practices.

As part of the broader capital funding plan, Binghamton University will undergo a rebranding effort to align more closely with the SUNY name and logo. This rebranding process will be consistent across the university centers within the SUNY system, enhancing recognition and cohesion.
