Bloodworks Northwest Declares ‘Code Red’ as Donations Plummet

Bloodworks Northwest is facing a critical shortage of blood supply, prompting the declaration of a “Code Red.” The organization has reported that it has less than one to two days’ worth of vital blood types and platelets. To stabilize the situation, Bloodworks is urgently calling for thousands of donations by February 14, 2026.

According to the Washington State Department of Health, this alarming shortage has the potential to disrupt routine surgeries and emergency medical care. Juan Cotto, a spokesperson for Bloodworks Northwest, explained that while blood shortages occur periodically due to the limited shelf life of blood components, the current situation is particularly dire.

Type O blood and platelets are in especially high demand. They are crucial for emergency treatments, surgeries, and other lifesaving procedures, as highlighted by health officials. The department noted that nationwide donation rates have declined, particularly due to winter weather and holiday cancellations of blood drives.

The situation has been exacerbated by recent weather events. Rain and flooding have significantly affected donor turnout, leading to the early closure of two donor centers in Washington earlier this week. Cotto indicated that logistical challenges due to flooding further complicated transportation and access to donation sites, resulting in fewer donors participating.

To manage the current demand, Bloodworks Northwest and the American Red Cross are sourcing blood from other regions. However, the health department cautioned that this approach is not sustainable in the long term. As of now, there are approximately 38,000 open donation slots available at Bloodworks through February, of which 23,000 must be filled by Valentine’s Day to ensure adequate supply levels.

One pint of blood donated can save up to three lives, underscoring the importance of community participation in blood donation efforts. It takes around 1,000 donors per day to meet the ongoing demand for blood products.
