Denver Broncos Part Ways with Offensive Coordinator Joe Lombardi

The Denver Broncos have terminated the contract of offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi just two days after head coach Sean Payton criticized the team’s offensive performance in their AFC Championship Game loss. This decision follows a disappointing showing against the New England Patriots, where the Broncos managed a mere 32 yards in the second half, culminating in a 10-7 defeat.

In the game held on January 29, 2024, backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham stepped in for the injured Bo Nix. The Broncos struggled offensively, recording only one first down after halftime and failing to extend any possession beyond 17 yards in the third and fourth quarters. Following the loss, Payton expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s inability to capitalize on momentum and field position, stating, “We needed more than that. It’ll start there.”

Lombardi, who had a lengthy coaching tenure under Payton at the New Orleans Saints, was brought on as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator following Payton’s hiring in 2023. Despite his extensive experience, including a total of 12 years with the Saints, Lombardi’s role did not shield him from the scrutiny of a lackluster offensive season. Payton, who serves as the team’s primary playcaller, has often voiced his frustrations regarding the offense’s performance.

Despite the offensive struggles, the Broncos showcased one of the league’s top defenses this season, ranking first in both sacks and red zone efficiency. They finished the regular season with an impressive record of 11-2 in one-score games, the most in NFL history. This defensive prowess allowed them to advance past the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional round, although they ultimately fell short against the Patriots.

In his end-of-season address, Payton highlighted specific areas for improvement, particularly the run game. He has already met with Zach Strief, the run game coordinator and assistant head coach, to strategize enhancements for the upcoming season. “That’ll be an important study and with urgency,” Payton remarked, emphasizing the need for a flexible offensive approach moving forward.

Looking ahead, the Broncos will need to fill Lombardi’s position. Internally, Strief and quarterbacks coach Davis Webb are considered strong candidates. Webb is also being considered for the head coach position with the Las Vegas Raiders, which could complicate the Broncos’ efforts to retain him.

While the offensive coordinator will play a significant role in weekly game planning, Payton has consistently affirmed his intention to maintain playcalling duties. This stance may pose challenges in retaining Webb long-term, especially if he opts to pursue head coaching opportunities.

As the Broncos navigate this transition, the focus will be on revitalizing their offense while capitalizing on the strengths of their defense in the upcoming season.
