Suspected Drunk Driver Jailed After Series of Crashes in Vista

UPDATE: A 32-year-old man is behind bars following a chaotic string of traffic crashes in Vista, California on Monday night. The suspect, arrested shortly after 7:30 p.m., allegedly drove his pickup truck into multiple vehicles, causing significant property damage and injuring bystanders, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities report that the driver began his reckless spree by crashing into a parked vehicle and a steel gate at an apartment complex on Oak Drive. This initial impact set off a series of collisions, with the suspect plowing into two more parked cars and a fire hydrant. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic as the driver then veered onto the wrong side of the road on Foothill Drive, sideswiping a passing vehicle and forcing other motorists to take evasive action.

The situation escalated dramatically as the driver attempted to evade capture. He crashed head-on into another vehicle after trying to pass cars over double yellow lines. “In an attempt to flee this scene, (the driver) reversed and then accelerated forward, ramming the victim’s vehicle to push it out of the way,” stated Lt. Noah Zarnow. The victim of this collision sustained injuries and received treatment from paramedics on the scene.

Despite the extensive damage to his own truck, which had lost its front driver’s side tire, the suspect continued his reckless driving until he lost control and crashed into a power pole in a neighborhood near Alta Vista Botanical Gardens. Deputies swiftly took him into custody at this location.

The man is now facing 19 charges, including suspicion of DUI, hit-and-run causing injury, reckless driving, and operating a vehicle with a suspended license. He is also accused of violating the terms of his probation.
