BREAKING NEWS: Citadel’s Chief Technology Officer, Umesh Subramanian, is stepping down after 7 years in the role, effective immediately. This significant leadership change was confirmed in an internal memo from Chief Operating Officer Gerald Beeson on Wednesday.

Subramanian, who joined Citadel in 2018 from Goldman Sachs, will transition to new initiatives outside of technology within the firm, as stated in the memo. “Umesh will be taking on new challenges and opportunities at Citadel,” Beeson noted, emphasizing the firm’s support for Subramanian’s personal interests in pursuing other endeavors.

In a swift move, Andrew Janian is returning to Citadel to serve as interim CTO. Janian previously left the firm in early 2025 after a tenure that began in 2021, where he led equities engineering following a distinguished career at Two Sigma.

This executive shift comes as Citadel grapples with recent performance challenges, returning 10.2% in its flagship Wellington fund last year, a figure that lagged behind industry peers.

Subramanian is the second senior executive to exit Citadel’s C-suite in recent months, following former CFO Andrew Philipp‘s departure in late November to join Schonfeld as co-president.

The news of Subramanian’s departure is poised to impact Citadel’s technological direction and strategic initiatives, raising questions about the firm’s future tech leadership and operational efficiency.

As this story develops, industry observers will be watching closely to see how these leadership changes influence Citadel’s performance in the competitive financial services landscape.
