Trump Urges Putin to Pause Attacks as Ukraine Faces Energy Crisis

Ukrainian energy infrastructure experienced a temporary reprieve from attacks on January 26, 2024, following a personal appeal from former U.S. President Donald Trump to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin announced that this pause will only last until Sunday, February 1, 2024, raising concerns about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported on social media platform X that there were no overnight strikes on energy facilities after Trump’s intervention. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Over the past night, there were no strikes on energy facilities.” The pause in energy attacks comes as Ukraine grapples with frigid winter temperatures that threaten the safety and well-being of civilians.

Despite the lull in energy strikes, the conflict continues to escalate in other areas. Zelensky noted that Moscow has intensified its assaults on civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings. “Drone attacks on ordinary residential buildings in cities also continue,” he stated, highlighting the use of ballistic missiles against civilian production warehouses in the Kharkiv region, which included facilities of an American company.

Trump’s request to Putin to halt strikes on Ukrainian cities was made during a period of severe cold, which has left millions vulnerable to power outages. According to Zelensky, discussions about a cease-fire for energy infrastructure had taken place among Ukrainian, Russian, and American officials during a trilateral meeting earlier this month. On January 26, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia would adhere to a limited cease-fire concerning heating and power sources.

While the cease-fire began on Thursday night, Zelensky indicated that there had been attacks on energy infrastructure earlier that day. This limited pause will only last for a brief period, half the duration Trump requested. As the cease-fire nears its end, concerns remain about the humanitarian impact on the civilian population.

Zelensky also reported that Russia has not ceased its attacks on logistics networks and civilian areas. The Ukrainian president mentioned ongoing drone strikes in various regions, including a recent attack by Shahed kamikaze drones in Zaporizhzhia. Additionally, first-person view drone assaults continue almost constantly in the regions of Kherson and Dnipro, with significant damage reported in places like Nikopol.

The situation remains dire in the border regions of Chernihiv, Sumy, and Kharkiv, where local officials are working to stabilize power and heating systems. Zelensky highlighted the ongoing power crisis, noting that 378 multi-story buildings in Kyiv still lack heating as emergency resources are rushed to the capital. The urgent needs are particularly pronounced in Cherkasy and other central regions where homes depend on electric heating.

Efforts to restore power and heating are underway across various regions, including Poltava, Kirovohrad, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Vinnytsia, Chernivtsi, Khmelnytskyi, and Zhytomyr. While the pause in targeted energy strikes offers a brief respite, the ongoing conflict continues to impose significant humanitarian challenges across the nation.

Zelensky expressed gratitude to those providing assistance during this critical time, remarking, “Thank you to everyone who is helping.
