Lions Eye Six Free Agents Coached by Drew Petzing

The Detroit Lions are exploring potential roster additions as Drew Petzing takes the helm as their new offensive coordinator. With a background that includes coaching stints with the Cleveland Browns and the Arizona Cardinals, Petzing’s past associations could lead to some familiar faces joining the Lions this offseason. The team is assessing six impending free agents whom Petzing has coached, focusing on scheme fit and established trust rather than mere familiarity.

Potential Targets for the Lions

Among the most notable names is running back Nick Chubb, who played under Petzing from 2020 to 2022 in Cleveland. Although the Lions currently have a capable backfield, Chubb’s experience could be valuable if they decide to move on from David Montgomery. After facing injuries that limited his playtime, Chubb returned to form with the Houston Texans in 2025, averaging 4.1 yards per carry. At 30 years old, he may no longer be a primary ball carrier, but could serve as a reliable number two back in Detroit.

Wide receiver Marquis “Hollywood” Brown also enters the conversation after a season spent with Petzing in Arizona. During 2023, he tallied 51 receptions for 574 yards and four touchdowns. Brown’s production continued with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he recorded 49 catches for 587 yards and five touchdowns. While the Lions’ receiving corps is already strong, adding a player of Brown’s caliber could enhance their offensive depth.

Tight end Austin Hooper, who has experience with Petzing in Cleveland, could be another option. Although his role with the New England Patriots has diminished recently, he previously demonstrated his ability to contribute, catching 45 passes for 476 yards and three touchdowns last season. Hooper’s experience as a pass-blocker could also bolster the Lions’ offensive line.

Offensive Line Considerations

Offensive tackle Jack Conklin is a significant consideration, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding Taylor Decker‘s future in Detroit. Petzing coached Conklin during some of his best years, but injuries have plagued him, limiting his appearances to just 21 games over the past three seasons. If healthy, Conklin could provide the Lions with a high-level right tackle to stabilize their offensive line.

Interior offensive lineman Trystan Colon has previous ties to the Lions, having served as a reserve lineman in 2025. He spent two seasons under Petzing in Arizona, showcasing his versatility along the interior line. With questions surrounding the long-term positions of center Graham Glasgow and Tate Ratledge, Colon could be a strategic addition.

Lastly, Joel Bitonio, who played for Petzing from 2020 to 2022, stands out as a potential asset. A two-time first-team AP All-Pro selection, Bitonio has been a cornerstone for the Browns’ offensive line, allowing just eight sacks over the past four years. Although he will turn 35 early in the upcoming season, his experience and performance could provide critical support to the Lions’ offensive front.
