MTA Deploys De-Icer Trains as Snow Disrupts NYC Transit Service
UPDATE: Amid severe winter weather, the MTA is deploying specialized de-icer trains and jet blowers to combat snow and ice, ensuring New Yorkers can navigate the city’s transit system safely. As heavy snow blankets the area, the need for efficient snow removal has never been more critical.
The MTA confirmed that de-icer trains, modified retired subway cars equipped with tanks to spray de-icing fluid, are actively being used on the city’s 220 miles of outdoor subway tracks. Jet blowers, repurposed from aircraft, generate an impressive 2,500 pounds of thrust to blast away snow and slush, preventing major disruptions during winter storms. “It’s s(no)w surprise we use them to great effect during big winter storms,” stated Erika Schaub, Senior Director of Emergency Management and Preparedness.
Transit officials acknowledge that snow removal at bus stops has been a challenge. Many reports have surfaced about unshoveled bus stops making travel difficult. Frank Farrell, Executive Vice President of the New York City Transit Department of Buses, emphasized that snow removal involves collaboration between the New York City Departments of Sanitation and Transportation (DSNY and DOT). DSNY is responsible for stops without shelters, while JCDecaux handles snow removal from benches at sheltered stops.
In another pressing issue, the status board at the W 145 St-St Nicholas Av station has been out of service for months. Shanifah Rieara, MTA Chief Customer Officer, confirmed that the board has a power issue and the MTA is working with an external partner to expedite its repair. Riders are encouraged to report any issues with digital screens via the MTA app, online feedback form, or by calling 511.
With winter storms expected to continue, transit users are urged to stay informed about service changes. The MTA’s proactive measures are crucial for maintaining transit reliability during these challenging conditions.
As the situation evolves, New Yorkers are advised to keep an eye on official MTA updates for the latest information on service status and snow removal efforts. The MTA is committed to ensuring safe and efficient travel across the city, reinforcing the importance of community collaboration in overcoming winter challenges.
For immediate assistance or to report transit issues, contact the MTA directly or utilize their digital platforms. Stay safe and informed as New York City navigates through this winter storm.
