NIC Provides Essential Mental Health Support for Students
Mental health remains a pressing concern for students at North Idaho College (NIC). The institution offers various resources aimed at supporting students facing mental health challenges. While everyone deals with mental health issues to some extent, factors such as genetic predisposition, brain chemistry imbalances, childhood trauma, chronic stress, social isolation, and physical illnesses can intensify these struggles.
Mental health awareness is crucial as students often experience the pressure to maintain productivity. NIC student Ezra Tickemyer noted, “In a world filled with so much industrialism, we end up being so focused on productivity. To admit that there’s a weakness or a shortcoming, many hide it out of fear.” Tickemyer emphasized the importance of discussing mental health openly, as many individuals may not feel they are suffering enough to seek help or may not feel safe doing so.
On-Campus Counseling Services
NIC offers on-campus counseling services designed to assist students in managing their mental health. Deana Kalberg, NIC’s primary counselor, plays a vital role in teaching students effective strategies for stress reduction, anxiety management, and coping skills for situations like testing or public speaking. “I literally will help students with anything from getting on a better sleep schedule, processing emotions from a breakup, dealing with chronic depression, trauma, or their stress going up,” Kalberg stated.
While many students are aware of these resources, some remain hesitant to approach counselors for various reasons. Kai Scott, a fellow student, expressed a preference for visiting the school counselor for academic stress rather than personal issues. “I feel like more personal stress is for outside therapists who actually deal with that on a daily basis,” Scott said. This perspective reveals a common trend among students who may view academic and personal stress as distinct categories requiring different forms of support.
Another student, Ellie Sykes, highlighted the pressure felt by students regarding academic responsibilities. “I feel like the school is kind of pressured to talk to you about getting your homework done while managing your mental health, but if you go somewhere else, they’re actually gonna take your issues seriously,” Sykes remarked. This sentiment underscores the need for a supportive environment where students feel their mental health concerns are validated.
Access and Confidentiality
Kalberg reassured students about the accessibility of her services. “I don’t bill. How I’m trained, how I operate, how I function, the confidentiality or the privacy, how I would conduct myself in my private practice, it’s all the same… the only difference is I don’t bill,” she explained. This unique aspect of NIC’s counseling services can alleviate financial concerns that may deter students from seeking help.
As mental health continues to be a vital aspect of overall well-being, NIC aims to provide a supportive framework for students to address their challenges. By fostering an environment where mental health is openly discussed and prioritizing accessible counseling services, NIC is taking important steps to ensure that students can seek the help they need without stigma or barriers.
