Former Representative Tom Malinowski has officially conceded the special primary election in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District to Analilia Mejia. This election was held to fill the seat previously occupied by Governor Mikie Sherrill. Malinowski, part of a crowded Democratic field of 11 candidates, faced a closely contested race against Mejia, who emerged with a narrow lead.

In a statement following his concession, Malinowski expressed his congratulations to Mejia, stating, “I congratulate Analilia Mejia on her hard-won victory in the NJ-11 special primary. I look forward to supporting her in the April general election. It is essential that we send a Democrat to Washington to fill this seat, not a rubber stamp for Donald Trump.” He also reflected on his campaign, thanking volunteers and staff for their contributions and emphasizing the positivity of his campaign efforts.

Mejia is expected to hold a news conference later today with her supporters to discuss her plans moving forward. She will now prepare to face Republican candidate Joe Hathaway, the mayor of Randolph, in the upcoming general election scheduled for April 16.

The Democratic primary, characterized by a diverse group of candidates, highlighted the significance of this seat in shaping the political landscape of New Jersey. Mejia, who previously worked on U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, has garnered endorsements from high-profile figures including Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

As the campaign progresses towards the general election, Mejia’s platform and support base will be crucial in determining the outcome in this pivotal district that encompasses parts of Morris, Essex, and Passaic Counties. The dynamics of the race are likely to evolve, especially as both candidates work to engage voters and address critical issues affecting their constituents.
