Advita Ortho Secures U.S. Patent for Innovative AI Surgical Tool
Advita Ortho, a global leader in medical technology, has been awarded a U.S. patent for its innovative AI-enabled surgical planning framework. The patent, numbered 12,544,141, was granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on February 9, 2026. This technology aims to enhance the decision-making process for surgeons during joint replacement procedures by enabling them to focus on the most critical clinical factors.
The complexity of joint replacement planning involves assessing multiple variables, including implant alignment, sizing, and soft-tissue balance. As personalized medicine continues to evolve, the number of considerations in surgical planning is increasing, presenting challenges for surgeons who must make nuanced decisions.
Laurent Angibaud, Senior Vice President of Advanced Surgical Technologies at Advita Ortho, emphasized the significance of this patent, stating, “This patent represents an important step in our journey toward smarter surgical planning.” He added that the goal is to provide tools that support surgeons while maintaining their clinical control, adapting to individual patients and procedures.
Advita’s patented approach utilizes a weight-based algorithm to prioritize various factors in surgical planning. Unlike traditional methods that treat all parameters equally, this framework enables a more tailored approach based on patient anatomy and surgeon preferences. The system is designed to learn from previous cases, continually refining its recommendations as more data becomes available.
According to Aurelio Sahagun, CEO of Advita Ortho, “This work reflects how we are applying artificial intelligence in practical, surgeon-driven ways.” He noted that by integrating clinical insight with real-world data, Advita is developing AI technologies that enhance consistency, personalization, and confidence in surgical decision-making.
Foundation for Future Innovations
The patent sets a crucial foundation for future advancements within Advita’s Active Intelligence® ecosystem. This includes enhanced decision support, data-driven optimization, and visualization tools that aim to further improve the surgical experience for both patients and healthcare providers.
