Cheverus Tops Varsity Maine Girls Basketball Poll Again
In the latest Varsity Maine girls basketball poll, the Cheverus Stags have retained their position as the unanimous No. 1 for the fifth consecutive week. Despite suffering their first loss of the season to Biddeford, Cheverus remains the top seed heading into the Class A South playoffs.
Cheverus’ setback against Biddeford came on February 3, 2026, but the team quickly rebounded with a victory over South Portland. The Red Riots, who defeated Sanford earlier in the week, hold steady in the No. 2 position with a total of 75 points.
Poll Rankings and Recent Developments
Following their memorable win against Cheverus, Biddeford experienced a defeat in their season finale against Sanford. Nevertheless, the earlier victory was sufficient for the Tigers to climb past Oceanside and secure the No. 5 spot in the poll.
The rankings reflect minimal changes from the previous week. The only notable shift is the entry of Hampden Academy into the poll at No. 10, gathering 5 points. This adjustment highlights the competitive nature of the league as teams vie for recognition and improved standings.
The complete rankings, based on games played prior to February 3, 2026, are as follows:
1. Cheverus (9) – 90 points
2. South Portland – 75 points
3. Mt. Ararat – 63 points
4. Sanford – 60 points
5. Biddeford – 51 points
6. Oceanside – 49 points
7. Gray-New Gloucester – 42 points
8. Gardiner – 28 points
9. Camden Hills – 21 points
10. Hampden Academy – 5 points
This poll is compiled by the Varsity Maine staff, led by Assistant Sports Editor Bob Aube. The focus on high school sports remains strong, emphasizing the importance of these moments for the communities involved.
As the playoffs approach, teams are preparing for crucial matchups that will determine their paths to the championship. The intensity of the competition is palpable as schools rally behind their teams, showcasing the spirit and dedication of high school basketball in Maine.
