Mitchell Bake Sale Aims for Record $5,000 in Scholarships TODAY
URGENT UPDATE: The annual Valentine’s Bake Sale at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell is in full swing, with volunteers racing against the clock to raise over $5,000 for scholarships. This beloved event, now in its 10th year, culminates today, February 14, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and aims to surpass last year’s record.
With ovens working around the clock, more than 30 volunteers have turned frosting and flour into a community effort that has funded 52 scholarships for local students. “It takes a village,” said organizer Joan Anderson, highlighting the diverse age range of participants, from children to octogenarians.
What began as a small initiative by four retired teachers—Gwenda Koch, Kathy Otterby, Joan Anderson, and Sharon Scott—has transformed into a significant fundraiser. In its inaugural year of 2016, the bake sale raised approximately $300. Last year, it skyrocketed to more than $5,000.
This year, Brenda Mayer has taken production to new heights, preparing 72 batches of sugar cookie dough, equating to over 1,300 cookies. “I don’t like to speak in front of people, but this is something I enjoy,” Mayer explained, revealing her passion for baking and community service.
“Who would have ever thought that making Valentine cookies, rice treats, cupcakes, and brownies could net three and four and $5,000 worth of sales?” asked volunteer Michelle White, who sells her famous buttermilk brownies. “Isn’t that just crazy?”
As the countdown to the sale continues, a variety of treats are in high demand. From gluten-free options by Laura Weisz to heart-shaped brownies by Michelle White, the bake sale caters to all tastes, ensuring no one is left out this Valentine’s Day.
Today’s event is more than just a fundraiser; it embodies the spirit of community collaboration and tradition. Volunteers gather not only to bake but to socialize, creating a warm atmosphere that strengthens community bonds.
Looking ahead, Anderson and her team hope to continue this tradition for years to come, with plans to expand the scholarship program as more funds become available. “It’s about more than just cookies; it’s about giving back and supporting our youth,” Anderson stated.
Join the community at First Lutheran Church today to indulge in delicious treats and support the next generation of scholars. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this heartwarming event!
