EirTrade Aviation Acquires Youngest A320neos for Dismantling
EirTrade Aviation has announced a significant move in the aviation industry by partnering with RESIDCO to acquire two Airbus A320neo aircraft for dismantling. These planes, previously operated by Spirit Airlines, are only **three and a half years old** and have become the youngest airframes of their type ever designated for this process. The disassembly is taking place in **Goodyear, Arizona**, with parts scheduled for transfer to EirTrade’s hub in **Dallas**.
The decision to dismantle such new aircraft responds to the increasing demand for next-generation used serviceable material (USM) amid a growing global fleet of narrowbody jets. As airlines expand their operations, the need for high-quality aftermarket components is becoming crucial to maintain operational efficiency. This trend marks a shift in the industry, where early-life teardowns were once rare but are now being embraced as a strategy to address supply-chain challenges and rising maintenance costs.
Industry Impact of Early-Life Teardowns
The two Airbus A320neo aircraft, identified by their manufacturing serial numbers **MSN 10769** and **MSN 10921**, were registered with Spirit Airlines as **N950NK** and **N959NK**. Once the teardown is completed, EirTrade plans to offer a range of high-value components, many of which are compatible across various A320 models. This initiative enhances parts availability for one of the world’s most widely utilized aircraft families, ensuring operators can access the latest modification standards.
In addition to airframe materials, the acquisition includes four sets of essential replaceable units and equipment related to the **PW1100 engine program**. These components are anticipated to be in high demand as the A320neo fleet matures. Bill Thompson, Vice President Origination & Trading for the Americas at EirTrade Aviation, emphasized the focus on newer aircraft: “We are focused on newer vintage aircraft to ensure that our inventory contains the highest quality rotables which ensure that our customers can be supported with the latest modification standard components.”
Shifting Strategies in Aircraft Asset Management
Currently, there are over **4,400 Airbus A320neo** aircraft in commercial operation worldwide, with an additional **7,200 on order**. This figure does not account for the approximately **6,500 A320ceo** aircraft still active, many of which share components with the neo variant. Given these numbers, the A320 platform is expected to sustain its position as the largest segment of the global commercial fleet for years to come, leading to a steady increase in demand for USM.
Early-life teardowns provide operators with components that comply with contemporary regulatory and operational standards, offering a viable alternative to procuring new parts. For asset managers and lessors, this approach can unlock significant value even with relatively young aircraft. It also provides a safeguard against market fluctuations by diversifying revenue channels, reflecting a more adaptive and data-driven strategy for asset lifecycle management.
The collaboration between EirTrade and RESIDCO is built on a history of successful partnerships in delivering complex aviation asset solutions. RESIDCO’s aviation division supports the sector through aircraft and engine leasing, teardown financing, and the management of general aviation assets. Working together enables both companies to swiftly respond to changing market demands while ensuring execution reliability.
As the aviation industry continues to face rising fleet sizes and increasing parts demand, dismantling younger aircraft is likely to become more common. This trend illustrates how maintenance organizations are adjusting their asset strategies to enhance reliability and control costs. EirTrade has confirmed that disassembly of the aircraft is already in progress, with parts expected to be repaired, certified, and released to the market by the end of **March 2024** for sale, exchange, and fleet support.
