Tiger Woods Eyes Possible Return at 2024 Masters Tournament
Tiger Woods has not ruled out a potential return to competitive golf at the upcoming Masters Tournament in April 2024. The 15-time major champion made this statement on Tuesday, discussing his ongoing recovery from significant injuries.
Woods, now 50 years old, underwent lumbar disc replacement surgery in October 2023 and faced a ruptured Achilles tendon in March of the same year. He has not participated in any events since the Open Championship at Royal Troon in July 2024. Speaking at the Genesis Invitational, where he serves as tournament host, Woods acknowledged the challenges he has faced. “My body has been through a lot. Each and every day I keep trying, I keep progressing, trying to get it to a level that I can play at the highest level,” he said.
Woods reported that his Achilles is no longer a concern, allowing him to execute full golf shots. However, he admitted that he is still managing discomfort following his back surgery. “It’s just sore. It takes time,” he noted. He referenced fellow golfer Will Zalatoris, who underwent a similar procedure, and acknowledged that recovery may take longer for him due to age.
There is currently no official timeline for Woods’ return to the sport. Despite moments of brilliance in recent tournaments, the cumulative effects of his surgeries have made it increasingly difficult for him to complete a full round over 72 holes. While he has previously dismissed the idea of using a golf cart during tournaments, Woods indicated that it might be a consideration for the Champions Tour, where he is eligible to compete. “I entered a new decade, so that number is starting to sink in and has us thinking about the opportunity to be able to play in a cart,” he said.
In addition to his rehabilitation efforts, Woods holds significant roles within the golfing community. He is a member of the PGA Tour policy board and serves as vice chairman for the PGA Tour Enterprises’ board of directors. He has been actively involved in discussions regarding potential changes to the tour’s format and schedule, with plans aiming for implementation as early as the 2025 season.
Considering his commitments, Woods has yet to decide on another potential role: serving as the Ryder Cup captain for Team USA at Adare Manor in 2027. “They have asked me for my input on it, and I haven’t made my decision yet,” he stated. “I’m trying to figure out what we’re trying to do with our tour. That’s been driving me hours upon hours every day and trying to figure out if I can actually do our team, our Team USA, and our players and everyone that’s going to be involved in the Ryder Cup, if I can do it justice with my time.”
As Woods continues to navigate his recovery and professional responsibilities, the golf world remains keenly interested in his potential return to the sport that has defined his remarkable career.
