Dramatic Fire Rescue in Mamaroneck: First Responders Save Lives

UPDATE: A heroic rescue unfolded Monday night in Mamaroneck as first responders saved multiple victims from a devastating house fire on Lester Avenue. The incident occurred near Hillside Avenue and was captured in dramatic bodycam footage, showcasing the urgent efforts of local police and firefighters.

The fire ignited on October 23, 2023, endangering lives and destroying property. First responders faced intense heat and smoke as they worked to pull residents to safety. Body camera footage from the Mamaroneck Police revealed the seamless teamwork among officers and firefighters.

“They were on the money, like an oiled machine. Fantastic,” said Mamaroneck resident George Belsito, who witnessed the rescue. Officers Ferraro, Reyes, Sanchez, and Tunno from Mamaroneck were joined by Larchmont Officer Lopez, all operating with precision under pressure.

As firefighters battled the flames inside the home, the officers used a ladder extending more than 20 feet to reach victims trapped on the second floor. The tension escalated when a child’s cries echoed from a window, prompting an officer to reassure, “All right, we’re going to get mommy.”

Remarkably, the team managed to rescue a mother and her infant, along with other residents. Neighbor Silvestre Arenas described the scene, stating, “You could see them at the window, the mom and the child. The child was crying, and the mom was very scared, but they were able to pull them out to safety.”

Following the rescue, several residents were treated for smoke inhalation but are expected to recover. The community expressed immense gratitude for the swift actions of the first responders. “Everyone was saved, all I can say is God bless the firemen and the police department,” Belsito added.

Local resident Eddie Fuentes echoed the sentiment, saying, “Happy because they helped them, you know, a lot.” The damage from the fire, while significant, was measured in property lost, not lives saved.
