Elyria High School has appointed former student Hannah McCray as the new head coach of the girls soccer team. This announcement was made on February 19, 2025, marking a significant return for McCray, who graduated from Elyria just six years ago.

Athletic Director Heather Beck expressed enthusiasm regarding the promotion. “We are excited to have Hannah at the helm of our girls soccer program,” Beck stated. “Her passion for the school, dedication to our students, and knowledge of the game make her the ideal person to run this team.”

McCray initially joined the Elyria coaching staff as an assistant in 2022. During her first season, the team recorded five wins, a foundation that has since improved under her guidance. In the most recent season, the Pioneers finished with a record of 7-10, including a 1-6 performance in the Southwestern Conference (SWC).

Team Highlights and Challenges Ahead

Under McCray’s leadership, the Pioneers will look to build on the momentum established over the past few years. The team will see the departure of nine seniors, including crucial players such as goalkeeper Jayden Daberkow, who made a remarkable 235 saves last season.

Despite the loss of experienced players, the Pioneers boast impressive talents among their returning roster. Freshman Elaina Martinez led the team with 16 goals, while junior Ehlaia Simmons contributed significantly with 15 goals and nine assists. McCray will need to leverage this talent while integrating new players to ensure the team’s competitive edge.

As she embarks on this new chapter, McCray is poised to bring fresh energy and strategic insight to the Pioneers, aiming for a successful season ahead. The Elyria community will undoubtedly rally behind her, eager to see how she develops the program and inspires the next generation of players.
