Nicholas Weinstock Joins Forces for Sequel to Nigerian Hit ‘Black Book’
Nicholas Weinstock, the Emmy-nominated producer known for his work on Severance, is set to produce the sequel to the acclaimed Nigerian film The Black Book. Titled The Black Book 2 – Old Scores, this follow-up aims to expand on the success of the original, which captivated audiences worldwide in 2023.
The first installment, directed by Editi Effiong, was made on a modest budget of $1 million. It achieved remarkable success, ranking as high as no. 3 on Netflix‘s global charts and appearing in the top 10 in over 69 countries, amassing more than 20 million views. The film stars Richard Mofe-Damijo as Paul Edima, a former hitman who seeks vengeance after his son is wrongfully killed by a corrupt police unit.
Continuing the Story and Themes
Weinstock’s Invention Studios will collaborate with Effiong’s Anakle Films on this new project. Effiong will reprise his roles as writer and director for the sequel. The Black Book 2 picks up right where its predecessor left off, following Edima as he continues his fight against systemic corruption. A promotional blurb indicates that the sequel will explore deeper themes of justice, redemption, and societal unrest in contemporary Nigeria.
“The Black Book showed us that local stories can spark global conversations,” Effiong stated. “With Old Scores, we’re not just continuing a story; we’re continuing a movement — one that affirms the power of African voices to shape cinema worldwide.”
Weinstock praised the unique impact of Effiong’s work, describing The Black Book as “not just a great action film but a film franchise of extraordinary skill, ambition, and worldwide commercial appeal.” He noted the current era as an exciting time for African and international creators to produce high-quality work that competes with traditional Hollywood.
Future Projects and Global Impact
Beyond The Black Book 2, Weinstock is also producing Clarissa, a modern adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s novel Mrs. Dalloway, set in Nigeria. This project features a talented cast, including Sophie Okonedo and David Oyelowo, and has recently secured U.S. distribution through Neon.
The partnership between Weinstock and Effiong underscores the growing trend of international collaboration in the film industry. Both 3Point0 Labs and Zero Gravity represent their respective production companies, while Weinstock is represented by CAA and Aron Baumel of Goodman Genow Schenkman Smelkinson + Christopher.
With The Black Book 2 – Old Scores on the horizon, both producers are poised to make a significant impact on the global film landscape, emphasizing the importance of storytelling that resonates across cultural boundaries.
