Bismarck Wins First Conference Title Since 2009 with 63-56 Victory
UPDATE: The Bismarck girls basketball team has clinched its first MAAA Small School championship since 2009, defeating Arcadia Valley 63-56 in a thrilling matchup on Thursday evening in Ironton. This victory marks a significant moment for the Lady Indians, who snapped a five-game losing streak against the Lady Tigers.
In a nail-biting finish, senior guard Halie Dickey led Bismarck with a game-high 23 points and four steals, demonstrating remarkable poise under pressure. With just one minute left on the clock, key plays by teammates, including Kinsey Hubbs, helped maintain a narrow lead as the clock wound down.
Bismarck (17-4, 3-0) faced a formidable opponent in Arcadia Valley (14-10, 3-1), but they remained unfazed by the urgency brought by their rivals. The game turned pivotal as Bismarck scored crucial points during a tense sequence in the final minutes, allowing them to secure the championship title.
The Lady Tigers’ Braelyn Turnbough made a strong effort, contributing 17 points, six rebounds, and five assists. However, despite several opportunities to close the gap, Arcadia Valley struggled to capitalize, missing seven consecutive shots late in the game.
The atmosphere was electric as Bismarck opened strong, quickly gaining a lead with a series of impressive plays. Both teams exchanged leads throughout the game, with Bismarck finding a crucial advantage thanks to free throws and a significant three-pointer from Halie Dickey.
As the final buzzer sounded, the victory not only awarded Bismarck the championship but also showcased the resilience of first-year head coach Logan Blunt and his team’s determination. The Lady Indians are now set to continue their momentum into the district tournament, where they are assigned the No. 1 seed in Class 2, District 3.
What’s next? Bismarck will face either Ellington or East Carter in their upcoming district game on Wednesday, while Arcadia Valley will look to regroup as they host Class 3, District 3.
