Ronyell Whitaker, a former football standout at Lake Taylor High School and Virginia Tech, has passed away at the age of 46. The Norfolk native’s family confirmed his death on Sunday, February 21, 2026, although they did not disclose a cause or any funeral arrangements.

In a statement, his family reflected on his life, stating, “Ronyell lived a life marked by passion, perseverance and purpose.” They emphasized his remarkable journey from high school to college football, where he played for the Virginia Tech Hokies, making a significant impact with his talent and leadership.

From High School to NFL Stardom

Whitaker’s athletic prowess was evident during his time at Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk, Virginia. He amassed over 6,400 yards and 84 touchdowns as an offensive and defensive player. His exceptional skills earned him recognition as a three-time All-Tidewater first-team selection and the title of The Virginian-Pilot Abe Goldblatt All-Tidewater Football Player of the Year in 1997.

Dan Newell, his coach at Lake Taylor, praised him, stating, “Ronyell has proven over and over that there is nothing he can’t accomplish.” This determination carried Whitaker to Virginia Tech, where he redshirted in 1998 before playing four seasons. He started the last three years, earning accolades such as a second-team All-Big East selection in 2000 after intercepting five passes.

In 2001, Whitaker distinguished himself as a first-team All-Big East player and became the first Virginia Tech defensive back in 34 years to be named to an Associated Press All-America team. He completed his collegiate career with 190 tackles, seven interceptions, and 29 pass breakups in 47 games.

Professional Career and Legacy

After going undrafted in the NFL, Whitaker signed as a free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played in four games during the 2003 season before continuing his career with the Minnesota Vikings, where he participated in a total of 27 games over the 2006 and 2007 seasons. He also had a brief stint with the Detroit Lions and later joined the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.

Following his football career, Whitaker contributed to the sport as a defensive backs coach at Chanhassen High School in Minnesota. His professional experience extended beyond athletics as he worked as a loss mitigation manager and relocating operation manager.
