Ford Recalls 412,774 SUVs Over Urgent Suspension Safety Risk
URGENT UPDATE: Ford Motor Company has just announced a significant recall affecting 412,774 Explorer SUVs due to serious suspension issues that could lead to a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of crashes. This recall specifically targets certain 2017-2019 Explorer models equipped with cross-axis ball joint parts manufactured by SAF.
The recall stems from reports indicating that under specific conditions, the rear suspension toe link may fracture. Early investigations initiated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed alarming incidents involving five 2018 Explorer models that experienced loss of steering control due to toe link fractures. In total, Ford has uncovered 26 additional reports related to this issue since the investigation commenced in late January 2023.
Authorities have not identified the exact cause of the fault, but preliminary evidence suggests that the ball joint could be seizing, creating a “bending moment” on the toe link that may lead to its fracture. Although Ford is not aware of any injuries linked to this defect, there are reports of two separate incidents where vehicles collided with road barriers after experiencing toe link failures.
Affected owners will receive notifications starting early next month. Ford plans to replace the problematic toe links with more robust components designed to better withstand potential failures. This is not the first time the Explorer has faced such a recall; Ford had previously addressed toe link fractures in certain 2013-2017 models back in 2021, but this recent issue raises new concerns about the safety of these vehicles.
As Ford continues to grapple with recalls across various vehicle models, this latest announcement highlights the automaker’s commitment to addressing potentially hazardous flaws quickly. The urgency surrounding this recall is crucial for ensuring the safety of thousands of drivers and their families.
Stay tuned for more updates as Ford provides further details on the recall process and the steps being taken to rectify this serious safety risk.
