North Dakota State Bison Generates Buzz in Mountain West Conference
North Dakota State University (NDSU) is making headlines in the Mountain West Conference after its recent admission to the league, generating considerable interest among sports media and fans. The conference unveiled its 2026 matchups on Tuesday, and NDSU’s entry has become the focal point of discussions across various outlets, including the Las Vegas Journal-Review, Albuquerque Journal, and Colorado Springs Gazette.
Curiosity Surrounds NDSU’s Transition
There is palpable excitement about how NDSU, a powerhouse in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), will perform in its first year competing in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). “I think there’s massive curiosity,” said Steve Cofield, a radio show host for ESPN Las Vegas. He noted the success of other schools like James Madison, which made a similar transition and fared well in the FBS. “North Dakota State is a better program, so I think there’s a curiosity about how they will adapt and perform,” he added.
The intrigue primarily stems from the schedule changes necessitated by NDSU’s admission. Established teams had already set their 2026 schedules, and adjustments were needed to accommodate the Bison’s entry. For example, the University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP) will now face NDSU in Fargo instead of a previously scheduled game in Las Vegas, a change that may not sit well with Miners fans.
“It’s probably mostly parents making the trip, as UTEP doesn’t travel exceptionally well outside of games against New Mexico State,” remarked Bret Bloomquist, a reporter for the El Paso Times. He expressed enthusiasm for visiting Fargo, noting his limited experiences there compared to Las Vegas.
Impact on Future Matchups and Fan Engagement
NDSU’s schedule for the upcoming season includes notable away games against the University of Hawaii, New Mexico, Air Force, and Nevada-Las Vegas, while also hosting Northern Illinois, UTEP, Nevada, and Wyoming. Specific dates and times for these matchups will be released later.
As fans consider traveling to see the Bison play, Cofield highlighted the potential draw of Las Vegas. With a significant NDSU alumni presence in the Phoenix area and direct flights from Fargo to Las Vegas, the game at Allegiant Stadium could attract considerable attention. Historically, teams like Hawaii and New Mexico have had strong fan bases in Las Vegas, especially with Hawaii and New Mexico competing for the Island Showdown Trophy.
NDSU joins the Mountain West alongside UTEP and Northern Illinois, the latter transitioning from the Mid-American Conference. UTEP’s matchup against a recent FCS powerhouse is not entirely new for the team, as Conference USA includes several schools with similar backgrounds, such as Kennesaw State and Sam Houston State.
Bloomquist noted that NDSU brings a significant reputation to the Mountain West. “North Dakota State does, in its own way, bring in a pretty big name, and I think people are excited about that,” he said. The Bison’s arrival has sparked optimism about the potential for competitive matchups and increased fan engagement in the league.
The anticipation surrounding NDSU’s integration into the Mountain West highlights the dynamic nature of college sports. As teams prepare for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on the Bison to see how they impact their new conference landscape.
