United Way Gala Raises $270,000, Celebrates Local Leaders
The United Way of St. Johns and Putnam Counties raised approximately $270,000 during its ninth annual Givers Gala, a significant event aimed at supporting local community initiatives. The funds will enhance the organization’s efforts in four key areas: healthy community, educational opportunity, community resiliency, and financial security.
Theresa Odom and William Dudley were honored for their exemplary contributions to the community. Odom received the Nancy Burns Trailblazer Award, while Dudley was presented with the Chair’s Award. Their recognition highlights the impact of dedicated individuals in fostering a stronger community.
Honoring Community Leaders
Theresa Odom, the manager of kitchen operations at Bread of Life Palatka, has a distinguished background, having served as Putnam County’s first female patrol officer. After spending 30 years in law enforcement, Odom transitioned to community service, where she has made a considerable impact. Since joining Bread of Life in 2019, she has played a pivotal role in revitalizing the struggling soup kitchen, taking on a leadership position among volunteers.
William Dudley, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, has dedicated his post-military career to advocating for veterans. With around 45 years in the aerospace industry, Dudley’s focus has shifted to supporting veterans through various initiatives, including the Veterans Treatment Court and the establishment of Veterans Village, which assists formerly homeless veterans in accessing essential health care services.
Community Impact and Future Goals
The success of the Givers Gala reflects a community committed to addressing critical issues. The funds raised will directly support local programs aimed at enhancing educational opportunities and promoting financial security among residents.
As the United Way of St. Johns and Putnam Counties looks to the future, its continued focus on these initiatives will be vital in fostering a healthier and more resilient community. The recognition of leaders like Odom and Dudley illustrates how individual efforts contribute to broader societal improvements, inspiring others to engage in community service.
In a world where community support is paramount, the Givers Gala stands as a testament to the power of collective action in driving positive change.
