U.S. and Israel Strike Claims Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei
The death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been reported following military strikes by the United States and Israel. The strikes, which occurred on October 14, 2023, have sparked a wave of reactions, particularly among Iranian expatriates in the United States, who view this moment as a potential turning point for Iran’s political landscape.
In Westwood, California, a gathering of approximately 150 to 200 Iranian-Americans took to the streets to celebrate Khamenei’s reported death. Demonstrators waved the pre-revolutionary Iranian flag, a green, white, and red tricolor featuring a lion and the sun, which was the national flag from 1917 until the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The atmosphere was jubilant as speakers condemned the former leader and dancers celebrated in the streets.
Shaheen Moshasha, a protestor selling flags, expressed his excitement. He stated, “In this, we see the culmination of decades of work, of relentless effort and perseverance by the Iranian people to overthrow the government that has been oppressing them.” Moshasha highlighted the belief that recent events were influenced by promises made by former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding regime change in Iran.
Signage at the protest prominently featured images of Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of former Shah of Iran Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Pahlavi has positioned himself as a potential leader in a post-Khamenei Iran, which resonates with many protestors seeking change. “I think it’s anyone’s guess on what actually happens next,” Moshasha remarked. He emphasized the importance of continued pressure on the U.S. and its allies to support Iranian aspirations for freedom.
The protest also showcased a sentiment among some Iranian-Americans that military intervention was necessary to dismantle Khamenei’s regime. Nilo Farmojab, draped in the pre-revolutionary flag, expressed her gratitude for the military strikes, describing them as a “rescue mission.” She asserted, “The people of Iran, bare handed, would never be able to fight against the regime.” Farmojab claimed that Iranians would be willing to accept casualties if it meant achieving a new government.
The strikes have drawn sharp reactions from Iran, with threats of retaliation being reported. Military actions in the region have heightened tensions, leading to concerns about incoming missiles and drones. As the situation unfolds, the international community is closely monitoring developments and potential consequences.
The response from the Iranian government has been swift, with officials condemning the strikes and vowing to retaliate against those responsible. The implications of Khamenei’s death, should it be confirmed, may reshape the political landscape in Iran and influence regional stability.
As the situation continues to evolve, both in Iran and among the Iranian diaspora, the world watches closely to see how this significant event will impact future relations and internal dynamics within Iran.
