Two senior aides to Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer have resigned after being given a 24-hour ultimatum by the White House. According to an exclusive report from the New York Post, the chief of staff and deputy chief of staff were informed that they had to leave their positions following directives from the White House to the Labor Department’s leadership.

This development follows a series of allegations against Chavez-DeRemer, including a report by The New York Times that detailed an event celebrating her 57th birthday. The gathering included a cake and guests, but was rebranded as a swearing-in ceremony. Critics allege this was an attempt to deflect scrutiny regarding her potential misuse of government funds.

In January, a whistle-blower filed a complaint with the inspector general’s office that led to an investigation into claims of professional misconduct involving Chavez-DeRemer and her close aides. The complaint suggested serious allegations, including that she consumed alcohol while on duty, engaged in an extramarital affair with a member of her security detail, and misused department resources for personal travel. The investigation remains ongoing.

As of Tuesday evening, there has been no public comment from either of the resigning aides or the White House regarding these developments.

Lori Chavez-DeRemer previously served as a Republican member of Congress representing Oregon and was the mayor of Happy Valley. Her political career has now been overshadowed by these allegations and the subsequent staff changes within her department.

The unfolding situation reflects broader concerns about accountability within government offices and the handling of ethical complaints. As investigations continue, the Labor Department faces challenges in maintaining public trust and ensuring transparency in its operations.
