Eighth-Grader Jon W. Ford Wins Humboldt Spelling Bee, Heads to D.C.

UPDATE: An impressive victory at the Paulette Gilliam Humboldt County Spelling Bee has catapulted Jon W. Ford, an eighth-grader from Pacific Union School, to national fame as he prepares for the highly anticipated Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. The competition took place on March 5, 2023, at the Sequoia Conference Center, where Ford clinched the title with the challenging word “effraction,” meaning the act of making forcible entry.

The stakes were high with 12 local students vying for the championship, and Ford’s win secures him a chance to compete for a grand prize of $40,000 at the national level from May 26-28, 2023. The excitement in the air was palpable as local educators and participants celebrated the remarkable talents of these young spellers.

“Watching these students spell words most adults wouldn’t even attempt was both impressive and a little humbling,” said Michael Davies-Hughes, the Humboldt County Superintendent of Schools. His statement reflects the pride the community feels in the achievements of its youth.

Ford’s principal, Mathew Bigham, expressed overwhelming support, stating, “On behalf of Pacific Union Elementary School, we would like to congratulate Jon W. Ford, Humboldt County’s Spelling Bee Champion! Jon’s hard work and commitment have earned him a well-deserved spot at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Maryland. We are all rooting for you, Jon!”

In addition to Ford’s victory, Cayana Kohndrow from Cuddeback School secured second place, while Michael Glines, a fifth grader from Ferndale Elementary School, finished third. Their accomplishments underscore the incredible talent emerging from Humboldt County schools.

The event was made possible through the efforts of dedicated volunteers, including Spelling Bee Coordinator Nanette Voss, who is an instructional coach at Eureka City Schools, along with judges Alexa Blania, Mauro Staiano, Kristin Sobilo, and Lily Herlihy. Notably, Coast Central Credit Union co-sponsored the Spelling Bee and provided a travel scholarship for Ford and his family, further emphasizing community support.

As the countdown to the national competition begins, all eyes will be on Jon W. Ford as he represents both his school and Humboldt County on a grand stage.
