Backyard Shed Transformed into Class 100 Semiconductor Cleanroom
In an innovative project that challenges conventional notions of semiconductor manufacturing, a backyard shed has been transformed into a Class 100 cleanroom. This remarkable conversion, undertaken by Dr. Semiconductor, demonstrates that effective cleanroom technology can be applied beyond large industrial facilities to more modest settings.
The cleanroom, designed for semiconductor research and development, adheres to stringent standards typically reserved for multi-million dollar fabrication facilities. Central to its operation is a HEPA filtration system that maintains positive pressure, ensuring a continuous flow of clean air while preventing contamination from the outside environment. This setup allows the shed to achieve a particle contamination level equivalent to a FED STD 209E Class 100 cleanroom, which corresponds to the ISO 5 classification, with a maximum of 3,520 particles per cubic meter. In contrast, standard room air measures around ISO 9 with up to 35,200,000 particles per cubic meter.
Upon entering the cleanroom, individuals first pass through a gowning room, where they change into appropriate cleanroom attire. This protocol is essential in maintaining the integrity of the clean environment. The interior features flame-resistant drywall and a smooth, water-based epoxy coating to minimize debris accumulation.
The air conditioning system plays a crucial role in regulating temperature, providing a stable environment for sensitive semiconductor processes. The combination of these elements not only meets but exceeds the necessary specifications for conducting research and development in semiconductor technology.
